Returning Home
A Shamanic and Somatic Approach to Wholeness.
Home is the place that we live within, it is the place and space which houses, holds and contains all the different aspects of who we are, the many facets of our being and all our stuff: from our most valued to that which hangs out in the junk drawer.
In the time that we currently are living in, most of us have the concept that our bodies are a home for our being and self, and while intellectually we may understand that premise, very few of us are connected to the fully embodied and lived experience of this. If our body is truly our home, then why is so much of our time spent focusing elsewhere? Embodiment is not an idea, it is a lived experience of actually being within the container of your body. This may sound easy, but in order to actually learn to inhabit our body, we must be willing to feel all the feelings that are here; the ones we have been avoiding, that have been tucked away and waiting for us to return to them. We are returning, because once we lived here. At one time as children, we felt free and open in our bodies. Free to feel, to express, to act, to play - until at some point the challenges and complexities of life and our upbringing got too painful, too confusing, too overwhelming to stay and so we left; vacating the premises, taking refuge in the mind, in work, in addiction, in distraction…. Anywhere but where the pain and discomfort lives.

This retreat is an invitation to return home: through the compassionate welcoming, the delicate allowing; through patience and cellular remembering. For you cannot force this work, you cannot strong arm yourself, bulldoze and push. You cannot schedule it, achieve it or coach it into happening. No. The home of your body is far too intelligent, advanced and sensitive for such methods of force to work. Such methods only drive our wounding deeper into the core of our being. The necessary process is much more subtle and delicate. Let us show you a new way…
With a sweet blend of teachings and experiences, you will learn how to truly listen to your body and let your body lead you down the path of healing. With a vibrant synthesis of Cross Cultural Shamanism and cutting edge relational healing methodology, you will be shown some of the most powerful tools for creating wholeness. This retreat hallmarks a revolutionary new way of healing and while it in and of itself will not change your life, it will no doubt be a catalyst for sustainable and integrative growth that will transform how you relate to yourself, your body and your life.
A Somatic Approach:
If the body is our home, then we have to start here. We must start at the beginning with why we left and how. From this awareness, we are able to follow the threads back into our being, to inhabit, be with and meet all that is waiting for us here. Teachings and practices offered are grounded and rooted in somatic therapy; a body based psychotherapy approach to creating wholeness: Mind, body and Soul.
You can expect to learn about and experience:
-
Emotional + Energetic Containment
-
Boundary Work + Forming Health Boundaries
-
Feeling, Grieving + Emotional Intelligence
-
Parts Work + How to Work with Your Parts

A Shamanic Approach:
While we believe deeply in the therapeutic process, we also know that the therapy model in the Dominant Culture leaves out many important aspects to healing that other cultures know are vital to health, healing and wholeness. It is for this reason we will be intentionally blending these methods together. Through rituals passed taught and passed down to us, we will share the power of connecting to that which is greater than us and honoring this, giving back to this and learning how to be in right relationship with life.
What you can expect to participate in:
-
2 Forest Medicine Ceremonies
-
1 Cacao Ceremony
-
Earth Based Shamanic Rituals (Despacho + Apacheta Creation)
-
Rituals for cleansing the energy body and releasing density
-
Earth Honouring practices for global healing of the earth and human bodies and spirit
Why Join us at Toji ?
It can be common on retreat that the experience of luxury and jaw-dropping beauty comes at the expense of the land and local community. This is one of the reasons that we have chosen Toji as our venue for this retreat in Costa Rica.
TOJI is the Maleku Indian Tribe word for 'sun'. The Maleku people honor the sun for providing life to the forest. This small Costa Rican tribe is very active in reforestation efforts and lives off of what nature provides them. The resort itself strives to embody this essence and has been designed and built, upon the principles of conservation and regenerative agriculture; partnering with the earth, growing food and living in harmony with the natural world. This makes Toji the perfect spot to host us for “Returning Home,” as we remember our vital role in connection with the whole.
Toji has a wider focus, which we are excited to support by choosing it as our container for our time together. It actively practices and teaches living in a circular economy; offering immersive education for guests, as well as programming within the local community. Their initiatives support and encourage conservation, regeneration and reforestation, with the intention of bringing benefit to the community, animals and land. We have personally visited Toji and heard directly from staff how much they love working there because they are treated more like family then employees. Everyone we met was excited and proud to show us around the resort, pointing out all the details that set them apart from other Costa Rican venues.
Toji is located 5 mins from town, but feels like miles away because of how it’s sweetly nestled into the hillside overlooking the Pacific ocean. The rooms and common spaces are simply decorated with natural tones and decor to support a feeling of being integrated into the stunning natural surroundings. The views from the rooms are truly the best art you could hope for ! The salt water infinity pool, seating areas, hiking trails and permaculture gardens provide retreat guests with endless opportunities to slow-down, take beauty in and remember our connection with the natural world. The hotel is a quick drive to the beach in Esterillos Oeste town, which is one of the few spots in Costa Rica that still feels like a little local town. Originally a fishing village with tales of mermaids, you can also catch a glimpse of La Sirena herself while relaxing in the warm tidal pools. We will have a couple beach trips included in our retreat time and if you can stay on afterwards, Esterillos has all kinds of rest and adventure possibilities for you to enjoy.

Kylie is the founder of Breath and Being - a private practice that focuses on Somatic Relational Counselling, Grief Tending and Breathwork. She has a deep reverence for working with breath as a way to help us meet our experiences, care for our emotional bodies and embrace our authentic selves. Kylie also holds a profound respect for the vast territory of grief and loss. She sees grief as a doorway into potentially living life in deeper connection with ourselves, each other and the natural world. Kylie brings embodiment and an open heart to whatever space she finds herself in. She is a lover of beauty, warmth, colour, animals ( especially her dog Tucker) and travel; she is a believer in the transformational power of loving presence.
Kylie is trained in both Clarity Breathwork and Numa Somatics, is a Reiki Master and has been studying grief tending / ritual, and transpersonal counselling for several years. Kylie is a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor and Grief Educator working in the Salmon Arm area and online. However, when it gets cold, you’ll find Kylie in her second home, Costa Rica. There she and her partner have been a part of a permaculture co-op project since 2009, where they help re-generate landscapes, build community, live in a sweet little earthship in an Eco-Community called VerdEnergia Pacifica.
Reanna has been working in the transformative realm of healing through Yoga, Somatics, Energy Healing and Coaching for almost 20 years. She has been leading trainings, retreats and working with 1:1 clients for 12 years and in the last 6; through mentorship, training and deep self-study, she as incorporated working with Forest Medicine and hosting ceremonies. She has been hosting group and private ceremonies and retreats all over BC and AB - this longer retreat in Costa Rica is a dream come true for being able to dive even deeper!
Reanna brought together a body of work called, The Boulter Method: a deeply life changing line of work that is a synthesis of her own personal journey and teachings from her mentor, Hal Boutler; as well as blend of other works she has trained in such as Gabor Maté's Compassionate Inquiry, Peter Levine and so much more! As a somatic therapist, Reanna brings deep knowledge of the body/mind connection and how to find inner harmony. The approach Reanna brings is gentle, loving and yet steeped in uncovering truth, honouring boundaries and turning towards the tough stuff. She is an advocate for "telling the truth faster and having more fun per hour" (a quote from Hal) and learning how to set ourselves free. She believes that the ways we do that are by no longer disowning and denying parts and aspects of ourselves, but by learning how to gently lean in, create sustainable self trust and living life as real as possible.

She is wife, mother a often refers to grief as her main initiator in life. She lives, works and plays in the Shuswap area of BC.
